“I would recommend to anyone to take part in a venture with SPW so that, for a lengthy period of time, you visit a place far away with a culture unlike one you have experienced before.  Not only did I learn from the people I met but I also discovered more about myself and what I am capable of doing.”

Glen Richardson, Tanzania (HEP)

SPW regularly organises events and occasions to raise awareness of the international work being facilitated by both national and international volunteers. One such example is our exhibition “ Nepal on Show”.

SPW Presents “ Nepal On Show”

SPW has been present in Nepal since 1991, focusing on the major health issues that are currently affecting youth and their communities, such as nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. As part of SPW's involvement, non-formal education techniques are implemented in order to develop the skills needed to bring about behavioral changes in practice and not just in theory. Student and community rallies, street dramas, sports days, speeches by local Non-Government institutions, and school and village competitions are all activities that the volunteers and communities work together to achieve.

SPW Nepal annually runs a youth art competition. The aim of the project is to bring local concerns to a national level, by providing students with the opportunity to safely express their personal views regarding the issues of their country. Images depict the Nepali landscape or daily village life, while others illustrate the unstable future of a vulnerable developing nation, through highlighting current political, social and economic concerns.

As a result of the yearly art competition the twelve winning pictures are printed in the SPW Nepal calendar. This year SPW Australia received some of the entrants' pictures to be placed in an exhibition to raise funds and awareness for international SPW projects. This rare opportunity allowed Australians to gain an insight into the lives of Nepali youth and the impact that SPW volunteers have on increasing community awareness of the ongoing health and environmental issues that affect rural Nepali villages.

With the kind assistance of Gasworks Art Park, the pictures were on display from the 1 st August until the 21 st August 2005.

Pictures are still available for purchase.
