“There is always the issue as to whether development work actually makes a difference to the communities that agencies work with.  Whilst in Africa , I came across numerous communities who talked of past projects that had broken down once agencies had left.  SPW trains volunteers in the latest techniques in order for their work to be as effective as possible.”

Melanie Smith, Uganda (CRP)

In each country the SPW offices devote considerable time to fundraising. This money is used primarily for the indigenous volunteers who need to be recruited, selected, trained and supported during placement. Some of these funds are also used to sustain the organisation.

Ideally, SPW would like to be able to subsidies Australian, New Zealand and European volunteers as well. But, in the present fundraising climate this is simply not feasible. For this reason, regrettably, we must ask you to pay for your own costs.

Fundraising is also about awareness raising, highlighting the vital needs and issues of developing nations such as HIV/AIDS, sanitation, water-borne illnesses and poverty.

So, you would like to go on an SPW program but don't know where you'll get the funds? Take a lesson from volunteers that were like you this time last year!
